Welcome to Geography at Ballycastle High School.  We aim to:

  • Stimulate pupil’s interest in their surroundings.
  • Foster their sense of wonder at the beauty of the world around them.
  • Help them to develop an informed concern about the quality of the environment.
  • Enhance their sense of responsibility for care of the earth and its peoples.
  • Equip pupils with the geographical knowledge which will enable them to comprehend some of the major issues facing mankind.

 

 

 

KEY STAGE 3

Geography at this level follows the Northern Ireland Curriculum.  We aim to:

  •       Make Geography fun and enjoyable for the pupils. 
  •       Make it relevant to their every day lives. 
  •       Teach pupils about relevant, up-to-date issues that are affecting out shared world.
  •       Build up their knowledge of maps and places. 
  •       Give pupils the opportunity to conduct enquiry-based work. 
  •       Develop a skills based approach to learning.
  •       Provide pupils with a sound basis to advance to GCSE and A Level. 
  •       Provide pupils with the opportunities to conduct fieldwork.

GCSE

Pupils study the CCEA syllabus and this involves a study of 6 themes. 

  •       Physical components are all undertaken in Year 11, initially starting with Rivers and Coasts. 
  •       Human components are started Easter of Year 11, focusing on Population and Settlement. 
  •       Field work is undertaken in May / June and pupils continue the write up of their Controlled Assessment into Year 12. 
  •       A major component of our studies at KS4 focuses upon Case Study material, thus making Geography interesting, relevant and up-to-date in our forever changing       world.

Year 11 Unit 3: Fieldwork              Report Controlled Assessment
  • Pupils must complete a report of no more than 2000 words based on primary data collection.

Year 12 Unit 2: Living in Our             World A: People and Where They      Live (50%) B: Contrasts in World    Development (25%) C: Managing Our     Resources (25%) Exam - 1 hour 30 mins
  • 3 multi-part questions
  • Pupils answer all three questions.
37.5% Summer  Year 12

 

AS/A2 LEVEL

Pupils follow the CCEA Syllabus.  There is strong collaboration with Cross and Passion College at this Level, with pupils being taught equally between the 2 Geography Departments.

  •       Study follows on from GCSE and builds upon the foundations laid at that level. 
  •       Case Study material is extremely important.
  •       Mr McCandless teaches the Physical components at both AS and A2 Level. 
  •       CPC teach the Human components
  •       Coursework is undertaken in Year 13
  •       There is a great deal of independent learning at this level.
